August Xtra 2017

Dear all

Welcome to our August newsletter. I for one welcome the cooler weather as working in hotter temperatures is not particularly pleasant. At the same time, I do hope you have a wonderful holiday if you are staying in the UK over the coming weeks and that the sun shines for you.

Here are a few things happening in the coming weeks
Best wishes
Rev Simon Tillotson

Firstly, please let me bring to your attention the Crowdfunding Just Giving page for our churchyard paths.

We have had estimates for up to £80,000 to resurface both car parks and the paths. We have now resurfaced our main church car park but we still have our churchyard paths and Shirley Hall car park to do. We may attract more grants and legacies in the coming years so we are aiming to raise £20,000 through local fundraising for the time being. This is a huge amount of money but good quality tarmacking is extremely expensive these days and we have a large number of paths in the churchyard. If we reach £20,000 it is our hope that we can carry out the work on the churchyard paths in the next couple of years. So please be generous.

The link to the Just Giving page is as follows

Secondly, let me bring to your attention our holiday club which is one of several taking place over the next few weeks. We already have 16 children signed up for the All Saints one, but there is still room for more. Please contact Jane on the below number if you would like your children to come to the club.

PILGRIM COURSE

Our Pilgrim course recommences on Tuesday 25th July. The two modules will run till December.

It is absolutely fine to attend Pilgrim if you have not attended the previous modules. The conversations and spirituality and prayer support are always of the highest order . As you will see from clicking this link, we will be looking at the Creeds and then the Eucharist between now and Christmas. Don't though feel that you have to attend both modules. You can attend just the one if you prefer.

BLESSING OF THE WATERS
THURSDAY 27th JULY

This is a special service that takes place each year at Reeves Beach which is between the Harbour and the Horsebridge Centre.

It starts at 6.45pm and lasts about 30 minutes. Hymns, readings and a short address, this year by Fr David Vannerley from St John's Swalecliffe. The service will be led as usual by Rev Simon Tillotson.

Please put the date in your diary now. You will not regret attending. There is always plenty of atmosphere to this event.

NOTICE RE BOOTFAIRS IN CHURCH STREET
You might want to be aware that the Boot Fairs are on these dates -  Sunday 30th July, Sunday 27th August, Sunday 24th September. If you are able to walk it would be appreciated if you would consider parking in one of the residential streets on these mornings to allow members of the congregation who find walking difficult space to park in the main church car parks.

 "My Favourite Bible Passage"

A new preaching series is taking place at All Saints Whitstable from the late summer to late Autumn 2017. It is called "My Favourite Bible Passage".

Each preacher will speak about their favourite bible passage and why it has made an impact on them. The aim is then to make the congregation think themselves on a deeper level about their own spiritual journey, and hopefully help them along the way.

Dr Martin Garsed

 Canon Christopher Smith

 Denise Blaskett

 Rev Tony Crowe

 Canon David Springthorpe

Rev Keith McNicol

Each sermon from the series will take place during our 10am Sung Holy Communion service on a Sunday morning.

There will then be a discussion in the Thorpe Room at All Saints Whitstable for those who would like to talk through the issues raised by the sermon.  This will take place while tea and coffee are taking place in the church hall, immediately after the service Of course, please bring your drink through with you to the Thorpe Room. https://myfavouritebiblepassage.blogspot.co.uk/

FAMILY SERVICE IN AUGUST - "PICNIC EUCHARIST"
Our Family Service on 13th August is quite different from usual.
We will be having our usual 8am Book of Common Prayer service. There will then be a said Holy Communion service without hymns at 10am. The Family service though will take place at the Vicarage garden - or the hall if wet - starting at 11.30am on Sunday 13th August.
Please bring your own picnic, drinks and garden chair.
The "Picnic Eucharist" and lunch should be completed by 1pm, or 1.30pm if you wish to linger longer over your lunch and chat with folk.
The idea behind it is that is a way for people to get to know each other better and increase the sense of family spirit within the church.
No need to let us know you are coming - just come to the Vicarage - or hall if it is wet - on Sunday 13th August at 11.30am with a garden chair, drink and picnic.

PARISH WEEKEND AWAY
23 - 25 March 2018
Judds Folly Hotel, Syndale Park, Near Faversham
The date for our Parish Weekend has been booked so please put this date in your diaries.
This is an opportunity for the WHOLE CHURCH FAMILY to enjoy a time away together. Children very welcome.
The venue has been chosen so travelling time is minimal, lifts can be arranged.
An outline of the programme will be available for you when the time comes to take firm bookings - probably in October 2017.

Please put these dates in your diary now. We will be issuing formal booking forms in October 2017.

The Church Council have given approval for certain parts of our archives - mainly parish magazines and public records - to be put online. This is a huge undertaking but work has begun. Please visit this link to explore what has been done so far.
There are some exceptional things on this website - well worth a visit.
