June Xtra 2015

Dear all

At last - signs that summer is on its way!

Here are a few things of interest (hopefully!) to you for June at All Saints.

For many years our All Saints Garden Party has been a key fixture in the church calendar. The Social Committee have now given it a new name - the All Saints Summer Fete! We hope this name will make it clearer to newcomers what sort of event it is, as "Garden Party" is not a term that is commonly understood in today's society.

Here are the details from Phillip Williams, Chair of the Social Committee

This year’s Summer Event  - the SUMMER FETE - will be held on 27th JUNE from 2-4pm in the Vicarage Garden, and opened by Miss Whitstable
Our aim is to make it a really fun day for all our families and friends (young and old) - at the same time raising funds for the maintenance and running of our Church.
Amongst many varied activities will be  -
Dancing Display by children from Tankerton Dancing Academy
The ever popular background music by Whitstable Brass
Fancy Dress – 3 age groups (pre-school, infant, junior) – open theme, prize for each age group
Children’s activities such as Children’s corner, Lucky Dip, Fishing Game
All Age activities include BOUNCY CASTLE, Splat the Rat, Coconut Shy, competitions etc
Refreshments include Cream Teas, Strawberries, Ice Cream,
Stalls will be selling Cakes, Crafts, Books, Plants

We hope that YOU and YOUR FAMILY will come along and enjoy the fun and meeting others.

Our Family Communion service will take place as normal on Sunday June 14th at 10am. Adventurers and Xplore takes place on other weeks for children, but the 14th June will have a special All-Age theme suitable for young people as well as adults.

We are still looking for volunteers to help with our church breakfasts on the third Sunday of each month. Please let us know if you can help. Please come to our breakfasts. They start at about 8.45am on the third Sunday of each month.

I shall be running a course at the Monument Pub for anyone interested in asking questions about the evidence for the existence of God. This is quite a philosophical course and I have chosen the local pub as I believe it will encourage more people to attend - it is a fact that some find it hard to enter a church or church hall in our very secular culture. The course is open to believers, questioners, non-believers who are interested in the spiritual dimension. It will be on Tuesday evenings starting this coming Tuesday at 7.30pm. We shall be using the back room of the pub
Full details can be found by clicking here but please email me at if you would like to attend.

A reminder to all Cursillistas at All Saints that we are hosting the special Ultreya service this Saturday 30th May at 12 noon followed by a Bring and Share picnic. It would be good to see a good turn out from All Saints Cursillistas.

Cathy and I would like to invite you to our first Bring and Share lunch of the summer on Sunday 7th June from 12.15pm at the Vicarage garden. Please bring a plate of food to share with others and a chair. We will have a "pot luck" approach to what food is brought as organising it beforehand is tricky. This is the first of three. Simply come along. No need to let us know you are coming in advance.
NOTE FROM SIMON - If you are no longer able to attend services regularly at All Saints (maybe your children are involved in sports activities on a Sunday) I nonetheless hope you will consider coming to this lunch.  I promise there will be no sense of "where have you been?" if you come along - so please consider coming to this! You are loved and cared for as friends!! (though we will always welcome you warmly back to church when you are able to).

"WHAT IS TO HAVE GOOD DISAGREEMENT?"  - Visiting speak Jayne Ozanne speaks on the issue of real inclusion in the church - looking at issues of sexuality
It is very important to bring a garden chair and a picnic and drink if you are planning to attend. No need to let me know you are coming. Please come along to hear Jayne Ozanne speak....
Click here for details from the Whitstable Times Press release of what the event is about, time and other details....

Plans are afoot to host a church concert on 11th July but at the moment we are short of performers. Please email me at We should know if this is viable in the next couple of weeks. It is to raise money for our Church Organ restoration appeal.

Also thank you so much to those who have agreed to sponsor me for the walk I will be undertaking in August from Whitstable to Dover along the coast. This is again to raise money for the Church Organ restoration appeal. If you have not yet sponsored me and would like to please click here.
I should be able to arrange a hard copy sponsorship form in the coming month for those who would prefer to commit by pen rather than online.

3rd Whitstable (All Saints) Scout Group will be holding a Jumble Sale in All Saints Church Hall, Church Street, Whitstable, CT5 1PG on Saturday 20th June. Doors open at 2pm and the admission fee is 20p each. Jumble will be accepted at the hall between 9am and 11am on the morning of the sale.

Lots more I could have added ....please email me your wording and any pictures for the July edition by 25th June for any groups you are responsible for.

I would like to remind you all that I am happy to meet and pray for anyone who would appreciate that and we also have a small but committed team of pastoral assistants who would be happy to visit. If anyone would like to train to become a pastoral assistant please let me know.

May 2015 Xtra

Dear all

I am sorry this is so late this month but for various reasons I needed confirmation of a few events before I could "go to print" - albeit print online!

Firstly, a reminder that this Sunday, 10th May, we have our 10am Family Communion service. I will be leading the service as normal but our speakers will be Denise Blaskett and Paula Trewin who I am sure will give a brilliant All-Age talk.  Our normal 8am service takes place on Sunday as well as a special 6.30pm Christian Aid service at the United Reform Church in Whitstable as we start Christian Aid week together.

The rest of the services for the month are to be found on our main website.

In a few days time on Ascension Day we have a special service to start the Novena, nine days of prayer. Full details can be found at this link. (Please remember to come back to this page afterwards).

As you may be aware, there has been an issue in the Anglican church in the United States which has split the church in two - sexuality. Some people are forecasting the same happening in the UK. I am hosting a meeting on behalf of Changing Attitude in June to look at this issue and to help people understand each other who are coming from different viewpoints, precisely so that the church can manage to keep together as one while choosing to disagree in a spirit of mutual respect.

To find out about this event and full details, you may wish to read this article by Julie Wassmer from the Whitstable Times. Click the below link for details. (Please remember to bring a garden chair and picnic if you are coming to this event, and also to come back to this webpage after reading this- thanks. Whatever your opinion on this matter, and I realise views will vary, this promises to be a very important event where we learn from each other. It is free of charge. )

The date and venue and full details are to be found by clicking this link but if you miss it the venue is the Vicarage garden, here at All Saints and the date and time is 5pm on Saturday 6th June.
Here is the link.

In early June I shall be running a course looking at the philosophical arguments in favour of the existence of God. This is suitable for anyone who is thinking seriously about whether God exists or not, and is suitable for a believer who wants to strengthen their faith, or an agnostic or atheist who is interested in this as an issue.

Many things in life try our faith - the Nepal earthquake for example - and so asking deep questions is part and parcel of being truly human.

I have decided to host this event at the back room of the Monument pub. The reason behind this is that some people find entering a church building or church hall difficult as so many in our culture today have so little experience of "church". This is widely recognised and is a sign of perhaps how far the church and society have parted. Many churches hold events in pubs now as a way of reaching out to our culture. Also, it's a friendly and relaxed setting. I am afraid I will be unable to pay for the drinks! It would be helpful if you could email me at to let me know. Full details are to be found on this website.

Congratulations to Karen, Liz, Sue and Julie all from All Saints who were confirmed by the Bishop of Dover at Christ Church Herne Bay in May. Please pray for them as they journey on with God in the years ahead. Let me know if you would be interested in being confirmed - there are confirmations at the Cathedral later this year and in Whitstable next May.

A reasonably good sized group of people from All Saints and St Alphege Seasalter are travelling to Germany next week to join our brothers and sisters in Christ from our partner churches in the southern Black Forest area of Germany. We will be joined by our friends from Teltow, near Berlin, who we are also in partnership with.
This partnership is truly blessed by God. Please pray for all of us who are going on this trip, for safe travelling mercies and a wonderful time out there. I am greatly looking forward to it!

A reminder that Sing for your Life takes place again in May on 20th May. This has got off to a brilliant start with a large number of people participating. Please pray for it to continue to flourish.

Other church news

Congratulations to Mike Binks and Christine Williams who were elected as churchwardens, Mike for the first time. Please pray for them and for the new DCC as they meet with myself and Canon Kerry Thorpe on May 11th to look at our future outreach to our community. We will not be discussing worship as that was looked at last year and decisions were made which we implemented, but we will be looking at other questions such as "how can we help the youth of our pastoral district more and help younger people to a faith in Christ in the right way?"

There is also a Sacred Space as part of the Novena on Saturday 23rd May at 8pm.

Organ Fundraising appeal

May I thank all those who took part in the Hymnathon before Easter. Next month I hope to publish full details of how much was raised as well as details of a sponsored walk in August and a summer concert for the organ appeal. I am sorry if I have not written personally to everyone who took part but please be assured your help was greatly appreciated.

Best wishes
