August 2016 - Monthly newsletter from All Saints Whitstable

Dear all

I am sending this out a few days early to give people a bit more notice about various events happening in the coming weeks, in particular the Blessing of the Waters which is next week.

I do hope you are coping with the hot weather. I have to say I love the heat when I am off work, but when I have work to do I do not enjoy the heat at all! I therefore fully sympathise with you if you find the heat difficult!

I do hope you find the below interesting.

Every good wish in Christ,

Rev Simon Tillotson

OYSTER WEEK EVENTS
First and foremost - the Blessing of the Waters, which takes place on Thursday 28th July at 6.45pm at Reeves Beach, half way between the Harbour and the Horsebridge Centre.
This is organised by the Association of the Men of Kent and Kentish Men.

Please do come and support this event which is a Christian act of witness and outreach to our community. The service normally takes about 30 minutes.

Click on the picture here to see it in full screen mode.
Another really terrific event in Oyster week is the Landing of the Catch which takes place on the beach between Whitstable Swimming pool and the Harbour this Saturday 24th July at 4.45pm. This is followed by a procession down the High Street.

Both these events are full of character and uplifting and I strongly recommend you consider attending. We have had so much sad news on our TV screens and in our newspapers recently, so we do need to find ways to celebrate life, and these two events allow this.

I also wish to draw your attention to a series of concerts for Oyster Week at St Alphege Church in the High Street.

SACRED SPACE

A reminder that Sacred Space takes place on Monday 25th July at 8pm at All Saints Whitstable. This takes the form of 45 minutes of silent prayer with music and incense and periods silence, and then spoken prayer.

If, like me, you have been spiritually shocked by the series of tragedies happening throughout the world, and exhausted by the constant to and fro of political events here in the UK, maybe this Sacred Space could be just the thing to allow you to rest in God's presence and be aware of the Holy Spirit with us.

"Be still for presence of the Lord, the Holy One is here."

Again, please click on the poster below for full screen

CHORAL EVENSONG

Please can I remind you also of the Choral Evensong which is coming up on Sunday 31st July at 6.30pm at All Saints church. This is a wonderfully spiritually uplifting service.

There is no Choral Evensong in August.

PET BLESSING SERVICE

Then in August, church services continue as usual with the exception of Sunday 14th August when we have our Pet Blessing Service for the 10th year in succession at 10am at the Vicarage Garden (please bring a garden chair).

This is an outreach event into the community whereby we change our normal pattern in order to minister to our wider pastoral district.

On this particular Sunday there is no 10am service in the church. Instead there is a spoken Holy Communion service lasting 30 minutes with no sermon at 11.15am. There is though the option of an 8am Holy Communion service with a short sermon if you are wishing to have a sermon on this particular Sunday.

Here are the full details of the Pet Blessing Service.
Please remember to bring a chair with you

Again, please click on the poster for full details in large screen.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY CLUB

This is a wonderful initiative that is being run by a number of the Team Churches in Whitstable and also other town centre churches. I am pleased to report that All Saints is taking part and am very grateful to those who have come forward to assist with it.

Please click on the poster for full details including the age range for children. Please share this with any families you think may be interested.

There are also other holiday clubs being put on by other churches in the town. For details of these please click here

CURSILLO
Vivienne Lateu, a member of the 10am Sunday service congregation, has recently attended a Cursillo weekend and wrote as follows about her experience:

CURSILLO #55

My four days at the Cursillo was full of prayer, friendship, tears and laughter.
It was a privilege to praise God with other Christians and to know that so many people were praying for me while on my special journey was at times overwhelming.

My faith in God has been renewed knowing that He is with me in good times and bad is a great comfort to me. I am sure that what I experienced during the journey on this course with Christ holding my hand will reveal his plans for me.

I would recommend the Cursillo to anybody who wants to know more about being a Christian and living a Christian life.

A huge thank you to all the people who gave up their time and worked so hard before, during and after Cursillo #55.

'Happy are those whose hearts are set on the pilgrim way'       Psalm 84.5

Vivienne Lateu

THANK YOU VIVIENNE FOR SHARING
The next Cursillo weekend  will be held at Judds Folly Hotel, Syndale Park, London Rd, Faversham, Kent ME13 0RH. The weekend will commence on Thursday 20th October 2016 and finish on Sunday 23rd October 2016. Please let us know if you are interested in coming on it.

FINALLY

We have received a large grant from the Waste company Viridor which means we will be able to carry out the restoration work on our church organ from October onwards this year. The Church Council would like to thank all of you who contributed so generously.

I am afraid there is more work to do and our next focus is on improving the car parks and churchyard paths.

We will keep you informed of progress.

If you are interested in serving on a committee to help with this please let me know (Simon) by emailing me at tillotsons@gmail.com
